South African singer, Songwriter, dancer and activist

 


1.       Born on 3rd November 1964 and Died on 9th May, 2004.

2.       She was Born in Langa Cape Town South Africa.

3.       She was the youngest of nine children.

4.       She was named  After the American singer Brenda Lee.

5.       Her Father died when she was (2) two years old.

6.       She was raised by her mother who was a pianist.

7.       She started earning money by singing for tourists.

8.       He was a South African singer, Songwriter, dancer and activist.

9.       Affectionately she called MaBrr by her fans, she was also known as the “Queen of African pop”, The Madonna of the townships or simply as The Black Madonna.

10.   At 16 years old she left cape town for Soweto, Johannesburg, First she joined a vocal group called Joy replacing a member who was on maternity leave.

11.   Later she became a lead singer of a group called Brenda and the big dudes.

12.   In 1985 she had a son named Bongani by a fellow big dudes musician.

13.   In 1989 She married Nhlanhla Mbambo and divorced in 1991.

14.   She was once a Cocaine addict.

15.   Some of her songs were for opposing the apartheid regime in South Africa.

16.   She returned to rehab clinics for about 30 times.

17.   Mumeza album was the best selling album in 1998.

18.   On 26th April, 2004. She collapsed at her home in Buccleuch, Gauteng and she was admitted into a Hospital in Sunninghill.

19.   A lot of reports came out regarding what caused her collapse, Such as (Cardiac arrest, asthma attack).

20.   But after the post-mortem she was found to have taken an overdose of cocaine which made her to be in coma and suffered lack of oxygen resulting into her having brain damage.

21.   She died 39 years old on 9th May, 2004.

22.   Fassie Won awards(1999 Best female artist and song of the year, 2004 Best selling release of the decade and song  of the decade , 2005 Life time achievement award, 2005 Academy award winning movie Tsotsi and (3) three Kora Awards).

23.   She was voted 17th  Top 100 Great South Africans.

24.   Her Son Bongani Dedicated his song I am So Sorry to her.

25.   In march 2006 a life -size Bronze Sculpture of Brenda Fassie by Artist Angus Taylor was installed outside Bassline, a music venue in Johannesburg.
